Thousand Islands

We learned from our recent trip to the thousand islands that there are actually one thousand eight hundred and sixty four islands in that area of the St. Lawrence River. The people of Alexandria Bay are a very modest populace.

After leaving North Lake, we headed due north through downtown Lowville and past the entrance to Fort Drum to where we started to pick up radio stations "en Francais." We found a campsite at Wellesley Island State Park with Ontario right across the river. The site was beautiful and we whiled away the evening playing music at the marina before heading to bed. Sleep was disturbed by some screaming and some apparent domestic violence followed by three police cars coming to visit. Ahhh...nature.

The next morning, we awoke early and headed to Alexandria Bay to take a boat tour on the river. We enjoyed weaving through the islands and finding some of the finest covered front porches that we had ever seen. We crossed the international boundary for the first time although we were back in the USA before we touched land again so passports were not required.

The boat dropped us at Boldt Castle, where we explored the interesting architecture and meticulous precision of the restoration effort. The opulence and architecture reminded us of Shelburne Farms if they decided to build a castle instead of a barn. We enjoyed the view of the yacht house while we snacked on apple chips from our orchard.

When the boat dropped us off at Alexandria Bay, we grabbed some lunch at Dock of the Bay Southern QBB [sic] oops!. After stuffing our faces with pulled pork, we were finally back on the road heading in the correct compass direction on this trip for the first time!
